I have a question for my Indian friends.
Have you published any books as print-on-demand in India? And if so, which company did you use, and were you happy with the experience?
When I published ‘Making Friends with the Crocodile’, I was hoping that because of the subject matter and the setting of the book, it would be of interest to Indian readers. Unfortunately, though, I created the paperback version through CreateSpace and whilst I am very happy with the book produced, it is one of the quirks of Amazon that they do not sell these through Amazon India.
And so I need another source.
I have learned that there are a few fairly new print-on demand companies in India, and looking at a few sites and reading some comments here and there, I quite like the look of Pothi.com.
Has anybody used them?
I would really appreciate any feedback or advice that anyone has to offer me on this.
Mick, I haven’t read or come across pothi. there’s a Hindi travel blogger I follow who self published his travel book on ladakh using another publisher.

Have a look. If you can read Hindi I can give you link where he has mentioned about it.

Checked with my contacts working in the Indian publishing industry about print-on-demand. Its usually a costly proposition for the publisher unless there is a bulk order. They incur very high paper, printing, binding (PPB) costs 😕

That’s interesting. Companies such as CreateSpace work on the assumption that the set up is entirely by computer file, which the author sends, so that costs the company nothing. And even one order simply incurs the costs (ink, paper, electricity) of one book, since it is not necessary to print any copies in advance. Thank you for that.

I have not come across the site pothi.com. It is a derivative of the Indian colloquial word ‘potha’, which is used fot ‘notebook’…

It’s fairly new, Rajiv. I believe there are a few Print-on-demand sites starting up in India, now. Pothi claims to have published over 6000 books already.

Mick did you have a look at link I mentioned?

I’ve had a look – it seems similar to Pothi in most ways. The thing really is that it would be good to talk to someone who has actually used one of these companies to see if they found any problems. If I can’t find anyone, then I’ll look around the internet a bit more to see if I can find any reports/comments on these sites, and then pick one and go ahead.
Thanks, Arv.
Unfortunately, I don’t read Hindi.

It’s because of this kind of challenge that I’ve not been able to do print copies of my poetry book yet. All the best with the search. I would love to know what you come with.
I would like to invite you to my blog party which just started. Link is titled ‘it’s party time come right in.”

I looked inside your book on Amazon. The plot seems pretty intriguing.

Thanks. I admit to being slightly nervous when I begin to get reviews from Indian readers – will they think it is an incredible cheek for a western male writer to write in the first person of an Indian female?
