A Bit Of Art From The Archives

Nepalese Village Door 22ins x 15ins Oil Pastels on paper 2014

My interpretation of the door to a house in the village of Khumjung, Nepal, high in the Himalaya on the Everest Trail. I was pleased with how this turned out and I’m thinking I should try one or two more similar paintings.

  1. I like it, very much. It brought to mind some of the architecture around Santa Fe, New Mexico, and even some of the very early Spanish-influenced homes of very early Texas. It’s probably the combination of wood and another material like adobe that evokes it.

As you know, I love photos or paintings of doors (and windows, too). I particularly like this one with its different shades and textures of the wood. It’s a gorgeous painting. Please, do share lots more of your pictures, Mick. I can see from your comments that your other friends agree about you displaying more of your fine work. X

I got some oil pastels from my last birthday, thinking it was a good idea, but I haven’t used them because I don’t have a clue where to start!

    1. Thank you, Ellie. I will put up some more, although I’m not sure I’ve got any other doors lurking (I will have a look).

Do have a go with your pastels. A good place to start is to treat them like the wax crayons we all had as children, but rather more sophisticated. If you can remember how to use those, do the same and then try a bit more detail.

I’ll be happy to see any of your paintings, Mick, even if they’re not doors or windows. You have so much talent in everything you paint, so I shall enjoy them either way.

Thanks for the encouragement to use my oils. I will dig them out of the back of the cupboard and have a go as soon as I have time. It could be fun, and Lord knows, I could do with a bit of that right now! X

  3. This is so good, Mick. So real. I can almost feel the door. I love the light on it and the texture of the door. I’ve never tried pastels. I had no idea you could achieve this look with it. Please listen to your muse and start painting again.
