Poem #6 of 6. The end of the journey.
The Old Way 6
When the square sails of the invading Romans
First appeared over the horizon,
This path was already ancient.
When the first sword was forged,
When the giant stones were placed
In mysterious alignments,
This path was already old.
Only when the great ice giants
Relaxed their grip on the land
Were these paths young.
These are paths to tread reverently,
Mindful of those countless others
Who also once passed this way.
Friend, take your place on this journey,
You are in fine company.
What a fantastic series of poems Mick. It’s been especially enjoyable for me as we’ve recently moved to a part of County Durham where there is a fair bit of ancient woodland. It’s bliss to spend time soaking up the atmosphere, which your poems speak of.

Thanks, Ellem. A lovely part of the country that, and unfortunately right at the other end of it to us. Hopefully there are plenty of Old Ways for you to enjoy around there.

It’s beautiful Mick. I’m guessing you have lots of ancient woodland and old ways down south.

We have a bit. Plenty of tracks, although not quite so much woodland as I’d like!

I really liked this one, Mick. Personally, it comforts me to think of all the others that have come before us, and (hopefully) all the others that will come after. We are in good company…..

Nice series. A history and ambiance like that seems to have been a great inspiration.

It definitely was. The majority of those poems were written in note form during one afternoon’s walking there.

Thanks, Sam. I like your mindful moment – you might like the first in the Old Way series at https://mickcanning.co/2019/03/09/the-old-way-1/ as it seems to have a little of the feel of your poem.
I’m not on Instagram, as I don’t use a smartphone, but I’ll look for your hat on Facebook!
